Calculating...Auditing CWT base rates manually on every bill?
Upload 2–3 recent carrier bills. Linehaul audits CWT rates and minimum charges automatically and provides an itemized Dispute Sheet.
How is Freight Hundredweight (CWT) Calculated?
Freight hundredweight (CWT) base rate is calculated by dividing total shipment weight in pounds by 100, then multiplying by the quoted tariff rate per hundredweight. Formula: (Weight in LBS ÷ 100) × CWT Rate = Base Linehaul Amount. If the calculated freight is lower than the carrier's Absolute Minimum Charge (AMC), the minimum floor applies.
Step-by-Step CWT Calculation Example
Assume a shipment billed at 1,425 LBS with a quoted tariff rate of $6.50 per CWT and an AMC of $75.00:
- Convert total weight to hundredweight units:
1,425 LBS ÷ 100 = 14.25 CWT - Multiply by CWT tariff rate:
14.25 × $6.50 = $92.625 - Apply commercial half-up rounding:
$92.63 Expected Base Linehaul - Evaluate against carrier minimum charge:
$92.63 > $75.00 AMC Floor (CWT applies)
Standard LTL Weight Breakpoint Scale (CWT Tiers)
CzarLite & Carrier Tariff StandardMotor carriers structure baseline class rates into standardized weight brackets. Higher weight brackets offer lower CWT rates:
| Weight Bracket Code | Weight Range (LBS) | Relative CWT Cost Scale | Deficit Weight Opportunity |
|---|---|---|---|
| L5C (Less than 500) | 1 – 499 LBS | Highest ($$$$) | Rate at 500 lbs if cheaper |
| M5C (Min 500) | 500 – 999 LBS | High ($$$) | Rate at 1,000 lbs if cheaper |
| M1M (Min 1,000) | 1,000 – 1,999 LBS | Moderate ($$) | Standard pallet bracket |
| M2M (Min 2,000) | 2,000 – 4,999 LBS | Discounted ($$) | Multi-pallet scale |
| M5M (Min 5,000) | 5,000 – 9,999 LBS | Bulk Discount ($) | Heavy volume LTL |
| M10M (Min 10,000) | 10,000+ LBS | Volume / Partial TL | Compare with dedicated TL |
